The Ionic Zone IZ-UV80 produces many times more UVGI than is needed in order to archive a 99% kill rate on the first pass, over 25,000 microwatt's of UVGI per second. This unit can only be used in your HVAC air duct system as exposure to UVC lamps this powerful would give you an instant tan and cause flash burns to your eyes. If you live in a humid area or are looking for mold, bacteria, and virus protection, you need a quality UV-C induct system and this one is top-of-the-line.

coils The Ionic Zone IZ-UV80 achieves a 99% virus, bacteria and mold kill rate by creating 25,000 microwatt's of UVGI (at a distance of 1 foot) from two 16" long UV lamps. Lab tests performed at the University of Minnesota, the University of Colorado, and Penn State University with induct UVC systems identical to the IZ-UV80 have replicated the 99% kill-rate results time and time again.   Use this in conjunction with MERV 11 furnace filters ($5 each) or a washable furnace filter for best results.

Installation Instructions    FAQ's

Key features:

  • 25,000 microwatt's of UVGI per second, enough for an "instant kill"  effect.
  • The IZ-UV80 air purifier has dual lamps for maximum efficiency. Dual 40 watt hot cathode ultraviolet double tube lamps offer intense air sterilization for maximum efficiency and air cleaning.
  • The IZ-UV80 generates safe and highly effective hydroxyls that also purify the air. Hydroxly Radicals are formed when the UVC strips hydrogen atoms from water molecules (H2O) forming hydroxyl (OH). The hydroxyl consists of a hydrogen atom and an oxygen atom with a shared electron and a little hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which purifies the air.
  • The IZ-UV80 is microprocessor controlled and 100% fully electronic.
  • This unit checks the power supply on its own, adjusts to voltage automatically.
  • For use with household or high current up to 100-277 Volts.
  • Comes with a 10 year parts and labor warranty.
  • Advanced end of life circuitry safely removes power from UVC lamps. Delivers safe operation by preventing potential lamp melting or cracking.
  • Low cost purifier lamp replacements, only $60 for the two 40W dual UVC lamps. (no ozone)
  • Metal housing, not plastic or stainless steel! Stainless steel can cause oxidation, which can hold moisture, which helps mold grow defeating the purpose of the unit. (electrolysis occurs when two different metals meet and is accelerated when humidity is present). Plastic units have a risk of melting or even burning near furnace heat, never a good idea where flames are present.
  • Destroys musty odors, pet dander, viruses, mold, bacteria, dust mites and other airborne microorganisms. Irradiates the furnace and HVAC coils and makes them like new again, increasing air flow and efficiency.

  • Parts are UL Listed
  • Thermal heat dissipation. Prevents lamp cycling or premature failure.

Clinical Study

Effect of ultraviolet germicidal lights installed in office ventilation systems on workers' health and wellbeing: double-blind multiple crossover trial

Dick Menzies, Julia Popa, James A Hanley, Thomas Rand, Donald K Milton>

Respiratory Epidemiology and Clinical Research Unit, Montreal Chest Institute (D Menzies MD, J Popa MEng) and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, McGill University, Montreal, Canada (D Menzies MD, J A Hanley PhD); Department of Biology, St Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (T Rand PhD); and Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA (D Milton PhD)

Summary

Background Workers in modern office buildings frequently have unexplained work-related symptoms or combinations of symptoms. We assessed whether ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) of drip pans and cooling coils within ventilation systems of office buildings would reduce microbial contamination, and thus occupants' work-related symptoms.

Methods We undertook a double blind, multiple crossover trial of 771 participants. In office buildings in Montreal, Canada, UVGI was alternately off for 12 weeks, then turned on for 4 weeks. We did this three times with UVGI on and three times with it off, for 48 consecutive weeks. Primary outcomes of self-reported work-related symptoms, and secondary outcomes of endotoxin and viable microbial concentrations in air and on surfaces, and other environmental covariates were measured six times.

Findings Operation of UVGI resulted in 99% (95% CI 67-100) reduction of microbial and endotoxin concentrations on irradiated surfaces within the ventilation systems. 771 participants appeared to remain masked, and reported no adverse effects. On the basis of within-person estimates, use of UVGI was associated with significantly fewer work-related symptoms overall (adjusted odds ratio 0·8 [95% CI 0·7-0·99]), as well as respiratory (0·6 [0·4-0·9]) and mucosal (0·7 [0·6-0·9]) symptoms than was non-use. Reduction of work-related mucosal symptoms was greatest among atopic workers (0·6 [0·5-0·8]), and never-smokers (0·7 [0·5-0·9]). With UVGI on, never-smokers also had large reduction of work-related respiratory (0·4 [0·2-0·9]), and musculoskeletal symptoms (0·5 [0·3-0·9]).

Interpretation

Installation of UGVI in most North American offices could resolve work-related symptoms in about 4 million employees, caused by microbial contamination of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. The cost of UVGI installation could in the long run prove cost-effective compared with the yearly losses from absence because of building-related illness.

Installation:

It takes about 20-30 minutes to install the IZ-UV80 uvc induct air purifier. The unit comes with a template and installation instructions that are easy to follow. If you have to pay someone to install the unit, it shouldn't cost more than $50 given it's only 20-30 minutes of work.

FAQ's

If you have a question not covered in the FAQ's, don't hesitate to call us toll free for fast, friendly assistance 9-5 M-F.

Q. What is the best furnace filter to use with your induct system?

A. We only recommend MERV 11 disposable filters, that's why we sell MERV 11 filters wholesale for around $6 a piece.  We do not recommend electronic or washable furnace filters. They're only MERV 2-5 and allow way too much dust to pass through. Using a MERV 11 filter and running your fan 24/7 will filter more dust from your home than several high capacity HEPA machines.

Q. How hard is i to install?

A. If you're no handy and don't have a drill and drill bits, we recommend you hire someone to install your unit. If you're handy, you'll have no problem at all.

Q. Does this unit produce ozone?

A. No.  UVC lamps at this wave length produce other types of oxidizers to clean the air in the presense of a catalyst which are not lung irritants like ozone in high concentrations.

Q: Does your UVC  induct system produce any ozone?

A: UV lamps produce noticeable ozone but not UVC lamps. So no, they do not produce any noticeable ozone. (0.002ppm) To put that in perspective, .8 is considered a high concentration of ozone by the EPA.

Q: How often do I have to replace the UV lamps?

A: The Ionic Zone IZ-UV80 UVC germicidal lamps operate at a wavelength of 253.7 nanometers and can last as long as 3 years. Each lamp is under warranty for 1 year, and 40W replacements are only $30.00 each, not $40 or $80 each like other companies (we don't mark them up)  We recommend annual changes of the UVC lamps for maximum ultraviolet air sterilization however.

Q: What kind of warranty does IZ-UV80 come with?

A: 10 years against parts and labor.  If it fails within 10 years, just give us a call.

Q: What if I don't have forced air?

A: The IZ-UV80 is for ventilation systems only. If you don't have forced air, we recommend the Airpura UV-600.

Q: I've just received my UVC induct air purifier. The instructions explain everything well, but I'm still not sure where to put it?

A:We recommend installation above the AC coils is possible, but anywhere in your duct work is fine. If you do not know where the AC coils are located, just look for a drain hose or copper lines entering your air duct. Some AC systems have a thin metal lawyer and insulation around the section of duct where the coils are located. Others have coils from the top to bottom. If you cannot drill right into the steel case of your duct work, call a professional or find a place away form the coils to install. You must be especially careful not to drill right into the AC copper lines near the coils. It's a good idea is to drill a very small inspection hole above the coils. If you encounter fiberglass insulation, call a local HVAC company to get free installation advice over the phone or to schedule an installation.  If you do not have A/C you can install the unit easily in the cold air return line, which is the duct that brings the air in the home or building to the furnace so it can be heated. If you're in doubt, call a heating & air conditioning company to install it for you. It doesn't cost much to have it professionally installed. Install time for professionals is usually less than 15 minutes.

Q. The HVAC contractor wants to cut the cord and wire it to the fan re-lay so it turns on when the fan turns on. Is this okay?

A. Our induct system is made to stay on all the time. Keeping the UV lamps on all the time will mean your AC coils remain mold and bacteria free.  It's also a good idea to run the fan on your HVAC system at least 12-18 hours a day.  The fan in your HVAC system is very powerful and it's capable of changing the air in your home ever 30 minutes to 1 hour, deepening on the size of your home. (Check your HVAC manual for the exact ACH readings) While HEPA filtration on a room to room basis is useful, the best way to remove dust from your home is to use a MERV 11 filter, our UVC induct system, and leave the fan running. Not only will you collect dust, you'll keep your air mold, virus, and bacteria free. Besides, most AC fans run on 20-30 watts, so it won't break the bank.
