EPA: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission put out a pamphlet: "The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality" that covers many if not most of the indoor air quality issues facing residential homes. This publication helps you identify IAQ problems, shows you how to measure pollution levels, gives you strategies for source control, ventilation, and air cleaners, a discussion of the health effects and ways to reduce exposure to radon, tobacco smoke, biological contaminants, stoves, heaters, fireplaces, and chimneys, household products,
formaldehyde, pesticides, asbestos, carpets, and lead. It also gives you advice when buying a home.  This publication is worthy of your consideration if you're interested in indoor air quality issues.

The EPA does not recommend any particular air cleaners and warns against using ozone generators as 'air purifiers".  We on the other hand have plenty of good advise on how to use air purification devices to address indoor air quality issues.

Hospitals and medical facilities favor the NQ Clarifier with it's 15 lbs of carbon and powerful UV lamps (2 or 4) that sterilize the air and remove harmful pathogens.  For chemical and restoration, it's hard to beat the Allerair VOC and Vocarb units. They have 18 lbs of specially blended carbons and filters to remove the strongest contaminants.

It's best to approach indoor air quality concerns as a war against "junk" in the air that can make you sick.  It requires a multi-front attack.  First, utilize a powerful in duct UVC sanitizer to keep your coils and HVAC system mold, bacteria, and virus free.  (Not using this device can lead to "sick home" syndrome)  Next, utilize air sterilizers such as the Airfree, Air Oasis, or Biozone to kill airborne pathogens on an area by area basis and the Ionic Zone IZ-270's or Nature's Air negative ion generator to increase negative ions on a room by room basis. For dust control, Austin Air and Allerair make great HEPA machines that cover up to 1500 sq. ft. If you also want virus protection, get the NQ Clarifier.  Finally, utilize the 3M Filtrete Ultra Allergen filter for your HVAC system and remove all chemical and pollution sources from your home ...ventilating when you can.
