UV Germicidal Protection

March 1, 2006

Air cleaners often have a rating based on their ability to remove dust, pollen, and larger smoke particles. Dust and pollen may make us sneeze, but it won't kill us or make us sick.  Viruses, mold, bacteria, and VOC make us sick and can even kill us.  But nobody is rating air purifier and air cleaners on their ability to remove those substances.  Why not?  Because the only air purifiers that can remove those substances are not sold in stores, not cheap, and not readily available. You see in order to remove the harmful airborne pathogens that can actually lead to disaster, you need UV germicidal protection, pounds of carbon-zeolite blends, anti microbial pre and post filters, and a large cabinet.  (We sell several such models by the way, the NQ Clarifier being the most notable)

Another great UV air purifier worthy of consideration is the Air Oasis line of UV air purifiers. Air Oasis units use utilize a patent pending catalyst to create health oxidizers that can travel throughout your entire home and kill viruses, mold, bacteria, VOC's, even oxidize chemicals. (Independent lab tests prove effectiveness) These units run from $149 for the bedroom unit to $369 for the 3000 sq. ft model that also works well against second hand smoke.

Before you invest in a UV model however, may I suggest you consider the Ionic Zone IZ-UV72 72 watt, 24,000 microwatt uv sanitizer first.  ($219).  It features two 36 watt duel UVC lamps that create a "kill zone" in your HVAC system and keep your coils mold and bacteria free.

If you have a large living area, over 1000 sq. ft where you spend a lot of time, then a high performing air cleaner makes sense. The NQ Environmental and Allerair models we sell both make a UV system and 15-18 lbs of activated carbon-zeolite.  Both cost around $700.  Both can filter the air over 3 times an hour in a 1000 sq. ft area.  The cost to run the unit over 5 years will be around $600 for the Allerair unit (one UV lamp) and $1000 for the NQ model (two-four UV lamps.
